Sheet Size: 14" x 20"; Image Size: 10 3/4" x 17 1/4"

Sawyier continues to illustrate his affection for the serene beauty that accompanies Frankfort’s rivers and streams with this painting of the Old Louisville Road as it runs along the bend of the Kentucky River just south of Benson Creek. The Old Louisville Road was used for transporting limestone from the Taylor Quarry by wagon to waiting boats for shipping to parts of Kentucky for the construction of buildings, roads and fences. Later, the road had been commonly referred to as River Road and shows up as Taylor Avenue on some maps.

The watercolor painting was a wedding gift purchased from Sawyier by Rebecca Watson for her sister Jane Swigert Watson. The marriage to Frances Warfield Clay took place on October 5, 1905 in the Watson House which still stands on the corner of Wapping Street and Watson Court in Frankfort. Upon her death, Jane left the painting to her oldest son, Watson Clay of Frankfort.
