Lonely Romance

THE MAYME BULL COLLECTION

Sheet Size: 9 3/4" x 17"; Image Size: 7" x 14 1/4"

This print is the second of a series to published from originals given by Paul Sawyier to my Great Aunt, Mayme Bull, and her parents Mr. and   Mrs. Samuel Corbin Bull.

The reflective water in Lonely Romance is a strong metaphor of Paul Sawyier's life. This river of life containing broken dreams like sparkling shards of glass in no way disputes the validity of the vision held within the artist's mind and above the wind blown turbulence of the water's surface where the majestic trees remain intact, as the seasons changed from spring into autumn beneath the brilliance of the setting sun.

Trying to interpret the landscape in Lonely Romance by studying the water's constantly changing reflection, made static by Paul's unerring hand, is as difficult as judging the character of a person by studying his shadow. Although Paul's life often appeared to be more like the chaotic ripple, awkwardly reflecting the like he sought to live, he was able in the midst of turmoil to keep a clear artistic vision and purpose and produce vast numbers of exquisite paintings.

Thought to be given to Mayme before he left for New York, this unsigned piece of art, was surely the unspoken acknowledgment between the lovers, of the nights they wouold not share together.
