THE MAYME BULL COLLECTION Sheet Size: 15 3/4" x 22 1/2"; Image Size: 13" x 20" This print is the fifth of a series to be published from originals given by Paul Sawyier to Benjamin's Great Aunt, Mayme Bull, and her parents Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Corbin Bull. As early as the 2 nd Century BC. Hemp has been historically recorded as the finest rope available. It has also been used for garments finer than linen, ribbon surpassing silk, and as a medicine for depression. Hemp was first introduced, by European documents, into America at Plymouth, Mass. in 1629.By 1877, Kentucky produced half of America's production of Hemp. This industry of noble origins was prolific in Paul Sawyier's lifetime. Although the commerce of Hemp has fallen for legal reasons, it nevertheless, has been a plant which has served mankind beneficially. Perhaps Paul Sawyier understood all too well the lack of appreciation for his labors through the long suffering efforts of the men who broke and prepared the Hemp for Harvest. The feel of the finished rope, like the critical scrutiny of his finished paintings, belie the exhaustive work necessary for their creation. HEMP HARVEST is dedicated to the efforts of all Men and Women, regardless of race, or religion; to the Dignity of Labor. This is the last print in the Mayme Bull Collection. On behalf of the late Vincent Benjamin Howard III, and his wife, Brenda, we conclude this very limited series of 6 prints, in hopes that we have elevated an appreciation for Paul Sawyier's genius and love for art into your hands. |
