Sheet Size: 10 3/4" x 16 1/4"; Image Size: 8" x 13 3/4" This painting of Downtown Frankfort shows signs of the daily activity beginning to come to life. The artwork propped against the courthouse wall and the full –leaved trees suggest the possibility of a mild and pleasant day. The mailbox askew on the lamp post was one of the main depositories of mail for the residents and merchants of Downtown Frankfort. The building in the right of the painting was The Branch Bank of Kentucky that was founded in 1835 ( Farmers Bank was not founded until 1850) and occupied the same building until 1948. According to custom the building included a residence for its president. In 1900 it became The National Branch Bank of Kentucky and was then purchased by Farmers Bank and Capital Trust Co., in 1948. The building was razed in 1959. |
