Sheet Size: 9 1/2" x 15 3/4"; Image Size: 6 3/4" x 13 1/4" Paul Sawyier piloted The Launch, his little houseboat, on the Kentucky River from 1908 through 1913, and during those five years he never tired of nature's ever-changing panorama of color. Since wintering on the water was usually heavy with misting grey, it is not surprising that sun-bathed spring days inspired him to load his pallet with color and seek the perfect subject. On just such a day, he discovered one of nature's most perfect compositions of land, sky, and water. Although it is not known whether the picturesque buildings that sit atop the hill housed a sawmill or John Cochran's little Spring Hill Distillery, the facility does identify the location of the scene as being across the river from the Hermitage Distillery in South Frankfort. Remnants of these buildings exist today. Fortunate owners of Sawyier prints have long since learned that his paintings always reflect a serene and beautiful world each new print made from one of his paintings is always eagerly awaited. Owners of "Bygone River Industry" prints will not be disappointed. |
